Central Dauphin East High School is in administrative lockdown while authorities search for a weapon in the building.
A district spokesperson says all students and staff are safe, but the building remains in lockdown while law enforcement do a systematic search due to "verified information" that there is a weapon in the school.
Authorities said a picture of a revolver with the location of the school was sent to police. They believe it was brought to the school by a student.
As of 1:15 p.m., police have yet to find the weapon, and about 40 officers are sweeping the building.
Police believe the gun was hidden or moved since the picture they received this morning, and students are not allowed to leave the school until they are cleared by police, and they won't be released until the search is over.
The school is working with law enforcement to determine what time that dismissal will take place. Parents will not be allowed to pick up their student until after the buses have left the building.
School district superintendent Aaron McConnell said that as of 1:30 p.m., the weapon had not yet been located. Police and K9 officers are performing a methodical search of the building, he said.
He also urged the public to avoid panicking.
"At this time we are seeing a lot of false information appearing on social media," McConnell said. "We are asking the public to refrain from posting rumor and speculation as it can lead to panic. Again, everyone is safe."
CD East students may not leave the building until it is cleared by police, McConnell said. The school district will continue to keep the public informed as more details become available.
