LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — Lancaster County police tried to capture a loose steer along a busy highway on Thursday.
According to the Pequea Township Police Department, on Nov. 15 at 11 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of W. Boehms Road and Willow Street Pike South for a loose steer in the area of the divided highway.
The steer was in the area of Baumgardner Road and 272 South. According to police, the steer had previously been tranquilized by the farmer that morning with no effect and several attempts were made to capture it, however, anytime anyone got within 100 feet the steer would run.
Officers worked to control traffic in the area to keep motorists safe as the 1,000-pound animal ran through residential neighborhoods and crossed over Route 272 South and Route 272 North multiple times.
There were safety issues for those in the area as the steer had run towards people and ran abruptly across the highway.
After two hours of the steer avoiding capture over the course of 3.5 miles, and with no sign of it slowing down, the steer made its way into an area where it could be euthanized with no additional threat to the public.
Pequea Township police were assisted by West Lampeter Township Police and several local citizens.
