YORK, Pa. — The WellSpan Mobile Mammography bus was parked at York City Hall's parking lot on Thursday, Sept. 19 for community members to get preventative screenings.
The event is a part of WellSpan's service to women, A Healthy Step Ahead.
This program offers 3D mammograms by appointment or walk-in to find any abnormalities in the breast tissue that could cause breast cancer as well as breast density.
“A mammogram consists of at least four pictures. We want two images per breast, there’s going to be some pressure, compression on your breast tissue," said Colleen Hunt, lead mammography technologist. "We’ll check your images before you go, we’ll take repeats if we need to, and then we’ll send your images to a breast radiologist, and you’ll have results within 2 to 3 days.”
The bus is in service three to four times a week across eight counties to help people who don't have cars or easy access to transportation.
It's recommended that women aged 40 and up get a mammogram once a year. A mammogram checks for indicators of breast cancer like anomalies in the breast, whether they are malignant or benign, and breast density.
To find out where the mammography bus will be next, patients can visit here. The mobile bus will be back in York on Saturday, Sept. 21 at the second annual Breast Health Fair at the York Cancer Center.
