Officials provide update on search for missing kayaker in York County

Aug. 13 marks day four of the search for a 10-year-old boy last seen Saturday afternoon kayaking along the Yellow Breeches Creek.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Officials have provided an update on the search for a missing kayaker in York County.

Fairview Township officials said in a press conference that the 10-year-old boy who went missing in Yellow Breeches Creek on Saturday has yet to be found.

"At this time today, we are extensively searching and clearing a debris field just upstream of the dam at the end of Limekiln Road and Slate Hill Road, which is the border between Cumberland County and York County," said Brandon Freistat, the emergency management coordinator of Fairview Township. "That debris field is very extensive. It is very labor-intensive."

On Monday, the search centered around that area and included emergency personnel searching in the water and underneath fallen trees from Saturday's storm.

Bystanders and media were cleared from near the scene at around 7:30 on Monday night, as a mobile command unit was brought in. Recovery operations finished for the night at around 10 p.m.

Aug. 13 marks day four of the search for the boy after he was separated Saturday from a group of three adults and three kids, and reportedly went underwater in the Yellow Breeches Creek near Fairview Township.

Approximately 200 workers have searched 1.5 miles of the Yellow Breeches Creek, with most of those workers being volunteers from all of the surrounding counties.

Leaders of the recovery mission said that the search is an "emotionally charged situation."

"When you have an operation like this, there's a combination of a sense of urgency, oftentimes a lot of helplessness, when things aren't happening as quickly as you wish they were," said Mike Parker of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. "That's what makes these folks so valuable, they're able to put their emotions aside and continue the job until it's done."

The search will reportedly continue until 7 p.m. this evening.
