Pennsylvania professor to appear on the History Channel

The episode of "Prison Chronicles" featuring Professor Gray airs next week.

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. — A professor from Monroe County is making a debut on television for his studies on history.

Dr. Michael Gray's office is inside Stroud Hall on the campus of East Stroudsburg University. He's been a professor at the university for 22 years and has spent most of his life studying Civil War-era prisons.

"I researched on the Elmyra prison camp in New York state. A lot of people didn't know about Elmyra, but I also wrote about Andersonville. A lot of people knew about Andersonville," said Dr. Gray.

Soon, he'll share that passion for history with the nation.

Dr. Gray will appear on an episode of the History Channel's "Prison Chronicles."

The episode features the Andersonville Prison, a Confederate prisoner of war camp in Georgia known for its deadly conditions.

"Having 13,000 Yankees parish in a prison camp on 26 acres, but also the human experience and survival skills and going through the incarceration that they did at Andersonville."

Dr. Gray says his time on national television is an added lesson for his students.

"We have a public history concentration here for undergrads, where it's history in Hollywood. In many ways, it's history outside of the classroom, so I'm able to give my students my experiences and translate that to them," said Dr. Gray.

The episode of "Prison Chronicles," featuring Dr. Gray, will air on the History Channel on Monday, September 16th, at 10:30 p.m.
