LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — Nearly six months after a deadly propane explosion at Bird-In-Hand Family Inn in Lancaster County, the company and the community are rebuilding a new structure meant to house the offices and rooms damaged in the December fire.
Tuesday morning a "barn raising" began - a long-time tradition for the Amish community - where workers come together to rebuild after a fire.
"From the ashes we rise," is a motto the Bird-In-Hand Family Inn has been using since the devastating fire, a fire that killed long-time employee, Michelle Miller, and destroyed a portion of the building.
But now they're reconstructing parts of the Inn that were lost and working to heal in the process.
Beechdale Builders will be on the grounds of the hotel both Tuesday and Wednesday from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. to frame the building, setting up the trusses and putting the roof on the new structure.
The new building at the front of the property will house the registration desk, sales office and seven guest rooms, including the popular Schoolhouse Suite and a new Barn Suite.
The Family Inn is located on part of the Smucker homestead, which has been in the family since 1911.
