National STEAM Day | Lancaster Science Factory encourages students to pursue the world of STEM

Lancaster Science Factory hosts several STEM/STEAM activities that encourage curiosity among both kids and adults.

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — It's National "STEM" or "STEAM" Day, a day that celebrates the world of science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

This type of education is a way for students to learn about these different subjects by taking a more hands-on approach.

At the Lancaster Science Factory, they've got all sorts of STEAM education fun.

“Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math are key to growing a well-developed society, a well-developed student, a well-developed human who can see all aspects of our world and how they work together,” said Joanne Trusz, STEM Educator at Lancaster Science Factory.

This kind of learning can include building a bridge made out of craft sticks, paper, and tape.

“Bridges bring us together; they connect us, and the most fundamental designs of bridge building will help you in designing anything else,” said Trusz.

Or maybe doing an activity where you discover that sometimes if you drop a bowling ball, the force compresses air and launches a tennis ball.

Even taking a look at how bubbles are formed - all of these activities fall under STEAM education. It's something that fosters creative problem-solving, collaboration, and critical thinking skills.

“I really hope that students take away how much fun science, technology, engineering, and math can be and how they can incorporate that into their life and that they stay curious,” said Trusz.

But it's not just the students who take part in this active learning, adults will come to the Lancaster Science Factory with their kids and enjoy the interactive education.

This type of education can translate into asking questions and finding new solutions to our ever-changing world.

“I want everyone … to realize from the parents down to toddlers that science is accessible, it’s understandable, and that they stay curious and keep wondering and keep searching for more answers,” said Trusz.

Saturday the Lancaster Science Factory is hosting one of their "qualifier" events for the upcoming Lancaster STEM Showdown

Kids will be able to build a bridge, do an egg drop, and even create the tallest tower.
