YORK, Pa. — Although Black Friday and Cyber Monday are in the books, you may still be ordering holiday gifts online.
And if those packages are being delivered to your front porch, be aware of "porch pirates."
The York City Police Department says they tend to see an increase in overall theft during the holiday season, some of which involves packages.
So, for the second year in a row, they are allowing York City residents to ship their holiday packages to the police station where they will be kept safe in Commissioner Michael Muldrow's office.
You can then pick your package up at the station during business hours and bring your ID to ensure you receive your mail.
This is something the police department hopes will not only help reduce the risk of package theft but also build their connection with the community.
“Typically, people think of the Police Department as a crime fighting entity, and that's only one portion of our role. You know, we're always looking for ways to positively engage with our community and figure out ways to better serve them," said Captain Daniel Lentz of the York City Police Department.
"And we think it's a great idea. A great way to connect with our community and just kind of continue to build that trust.”
This opportunity only applies to York City residents and the packages can't be over 25 pounds.
Your packages can be delivered and picked up at the York City Police Department until Christmas Eve.
