NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. — The New Cumberland Public Library is closed today due to the building having no heat.
Borough officials expect the HVAC system to be up and running and the library open tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 24. Authorities say transitioning from cooling to heating requires the help of a contractor, which contributed to the delay.
New Cumberland Borough officials said in a press release that they began working with a contractor in the middle of September with a goal date of Oct. 16 to transition the library building's system to heat. The HVAC system's glycol (antifreeze) level needs to be adjusted each time it is manually switched from cooling to heating or vice versa, and the contractor was waiting on results from a test designed to measure the glycol concentration to make the switch.
The Library Board decided to close the library on Monday when they knew on Saturday that heat would likely not be restored until sometime during the day on Monday.
The Board authorized the library to be closed until the matter is resolved, but Borough officials say per information from the contractor, the heat should be turned on sometime on Oct. 23. To that end, authorities expect the library to be open tomorrow.
"The Borough recognizes the frustration of all those involved and understands the concerns of residents impacted by the temporary closure," a spokesperson said in a press release.
New Cumberland Borough noted that many HVAC systems are designed to flip between cooling and heating at the flick of a switch, but the library's system is not that way.
