Newville farm giving horses second chance | On the Bright Side

A volunteer-run farm in Newville is giving horses a second chance.

NEWVILLE, Pa. — Jodi Kelly has loved horses for as long as she can remember.

She turned her passion into purpose, creating Rock Run Animal Rescue in 2012.

Jodi's 20 acres of land in Newville act as a haven for seven horses and other animals in need of a second chance.

"They're older and they are retired,” said Run Founder & President, Jodi Kelley. “Many people see them as unusable and used up and they still have so much to give."

Rock Run's ambassador, Buddy has been here more than half a decade.

Jodi saved the 26-year-old Tennessee Walker from auction.

"He was emaciated, very depressed, his head hung low, and it took some time for him to believe he could feel better,” said Kelley.

Over the next few months, Buddy began to heal with a specialized diet, medicine and a whole lot of love.

“Saying I love you, many times every day,” said Kelley. “They get that, understand that and then they come to believe it."

He's made a full recovery. And almost as if in return, Buddy and the other horses helped Jodi through the darkest time in her life.

"In 2018, my daughter died by suicide, and I was shattered,” said Kelley.  “The horses provided me with a lot of comfort during that time.  They are natural healers, and they love unconditionally."

That connection inspired her to start a horse therapy program at the farm, to help others in similar situations.

"Everybody is welcome, and we understand firsthand what you're going through,” said Kelley.  “Between the horses and the personal support, we can really make a difference."

And doing so, is helping keep her daughter's memory alive.  This is Lindsay’s legacy,” said Kelley.  “And I know she would be proud.”

This new therapy program is set to begin April 5th.  For more information on the program or to donate head here.
