'No one deserves to die:' Neighbors react to overnight shooting death of 21-year-old man

The York City Police are investigating a shooting that occurred overnight on Thursday along the 400 block of North Beaver Street.

YORK, Pa. — The York City Police Department is investigating a shooting along the 400 block of North Beaver Street that happened just before midnight on Thursday.

The shooting resulted in the death of a 21-year-old man.

“When I heard that someone was killed, I was like, ‘Oh no,'" said neighbor Dorca Ruiz.

Ruiz said she was home in her apartment when the shooting occurred. She described hearing loud bangs around the time of the incident but didn't realize at first that she was hearing gunshots.

“I thought they were firecrackers because they usually do that around here," said Ruiz. "Then when I saw the news and they said Beaver Street, I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s what happened.’”

The York County Coroner's Office has yet to release the identity of the 21-year-old victim. Samir Frelend said he had been friends with the victim since they were kids.

“It’s just really sad because he was a really good person," said Frelend. "I think no one deserves to die for anything, or in the sense of anything.”

Freland said shootings like this greatly impact close-knit neighborhoods across York. He is calling on the community to rally together and help prevent any more acts of violence.

“It’s like a branch. It’s really easy to break one branch, but if you put 20 of them together it’s really hard to break them," said Frelend. "We all need to come together. It’s not a few people or politicians, it’s the whole community.”

The York City Police Department said they are investigating the shooting, and have not arrested any suspects at this time.
