PennDOT removes previous speed restrictions on highways

As of Sunday morning, all restrictions have been lifted.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Editor's note: The video above is from Jan. 6.

Update, Jan. 7: PennDOT officials announced all vehicle restrictions on highways have been lifted on Sunday morning.

Previous: PennDOT has lifted vehicle and speed restrictions on major highways in the south-central Pennsylvania District 8 region that includes Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties.

Due to the winter storm impacting the region on Saturday morning, PennDOT temporarily restricted certain vehicles from using Interstates 81 and 83 to help ensure that the interstates remained open during the most challenging conditions of the winter storm.

The vehicle restrictions reflected Level 1 of the commonwealth’s weather event vehicle restriction plan (PDF). The restriction on the entire length of I-83 and on I-81 from the Maryland state line to I-83 has now been lifted.

The restriction remains in place on I-81 north of I-83.

PennDOT has also lifted speed and right-lane-only commercial vehicle restrictions on all roadways in the region.

PennDOT is continuing to treat roadways in the area and will continue until the roads are clear.

While PennDOT recommends not traveling during winter storms, motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
