YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Several homes on North Hills Road in Springettsbury Township will soon be gone.
A PennDOT official says demolition is expected to begin in less than two weeks.
“Contractors are staging to do some building demolition around exit 19, North Hills Road area, we expect that work is going to start sometime around July 22,” said David Thompson, District 8 Press Officer.
The homes are being torn down as part of PennDOT’s I-83 North York Widening Project.
The multi-year project aims to improve traffic flow and safety on and off Interstate 83.
“It’s basically expanding I-83, widening interstate I-83, and doing interchange improvements between exit 19 and exit 22,” Thompson said.
The project will be done in stages, some of which have already been completed.
Crews have already relocated the North George Street ramp onto northbound I-83 and completed renovations to the Market Street Bridge.
“Some of it's in final design, some of it's in preliminary design, and some of it's actually in construction,” Thompson explained.
Work being done to the Eberts Lane and Sherman Street Bridges is expected to continue until the end of the year.
Thompson estimates the project will be finished by 2033.
“It’s a large project, it’s complex, it’s going to take a long time but when it’s done it’s really going to improve safety and the efficient movement of traffic through that region,” Thompson said.
Although demolitions are expected to happen on North Hills Road, Thompson doesn’t expect the work to significantly impact the flow of traffic.
However, he does encourage drivers to keep up to date with traffic information by using the 511PA app or by visiting the project’s website for updates.
During demolition, drivers are encouraged to be mindful of road crews and practice safe driving.
