HARRISBURG, Pa. — The amount of money wagered in Pennsylvania on Sunday's Super Bowl decreased by 15% over the total bet in 2023, according to preliminary data released Wednesday by the Commonwealth's Gaming Control Board.

Pennsylvania residents placed $71,554,099 in wagers on Super Bowl LVIII, the PLCB said. The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the game to win their second straight title and their third championship since 2020.

In 2023, when the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, Pennsylvania's betters put up $84,313,189 in wagers, the Gaming Control Board said.

After payouts, the total wagering revenue is expected to be $11,062,911, compared to $29,722,902 in 2023, the Gaming Control Board said.

This was the sixth year in which legal sports wagering was available in Pennsylvania for the Super Bowl and the fourth in which online wagering options were available. This year, patrons could choose to place Super Bowl wagers at 18 retail locations and through 12 online wagering sites, according to the Gaming Control Board.

The Board also reports that there were more than 875,000 online betting accounts that were active in Pennsylvania during the Super Bowl weekend per data from geolocation technology service GeoComply. That is up from the 793,000 reported by GeoComply last year.

Additionally, GeoComply reported that it conducted more than 13.6 million geolocation checks during the weekend to ensure that the wagering activity was being conducted by individuals who were within Pennsylvania and were authorized to conduct wagering on a site, the Gaming Control Board said.

The activity reported by GeoComply does not include any wagering by patrons at retail sports wagering locations in the Commonwealth.
