PENNSYLVANIA, USA — The Keystone State is getting a few new updates for the first time in several years.
Governor Shapiro announced on Tuesday that the state will begin transitioning to a new license plate in 2025. The new plate is the state's first redesign in years and debuts the new 'Let Freedom Ring' design.
New "Welcome to Pennsylvania" highway signs have begun popping up alongside the new plates at different state border entry points in Adams, Bucks, Erie, Fulton, Monroe, Potter, Susquehanna and Tioga counties. PennDOT confirmed that another 29 signs are slated to be installed across the state in the coming months.
"Pennsylvania is the birthplace of our democracy, and as Governor, I have been focused on advancing real freedom across the Commonwealth," said Gov. Shapiro. "With all eyes on Pennsylvania as we prepare to host our country's 250 birthday in 2026, our new license plates and welcome signs will celebrate the best of what the Commonwealth has to offer and show the country why Pennsylvania is the Great American Getaway and the birthplace of American freedom."
The new designs complement the Pennsylvania: The Great American Getaway brand, which the Governor unveiled in May to ensure tourism is a key priority within his economic development strategy.
When the plates become available, fee information will be included with replacement instructions on PennDOT's website and will vary based on plate type and any optional personalization. PennDOT stated that it plans to use all existing standard-issue license plate inventory before the transition begins.
