State Police release New Year's weekend traffic enforcement stats

Troopers investigated 336 crashes across the state and made 326 DUI arrests over the three-day holiday weekend.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Pennsylvania State Police troopers investigated 336 crashes and made 326 DUI arrests across the state over the three-day New Year's holiday weekend, according to statistics released this week.

The total number of crashes investigated by State Police were down from last year's amount of 481 crashes, and troopers made 356 DUI arrests over the same three-day span last year, the law enforcement agency said.

Of the crashes investigated by State Police this year, five involved fatalities and 68 involved injuries, according to the statistics. Alcohol was a factor in 47 crashes, State Police said.

State Police issued a total of 3,833 speeding citations, cited 56 people for child seat violations, and issued 344 seat belt violation citations across the state.

These statistics cover only those incidents investigated by the State Police and do not include incidents to which other law enforcement agencies responded.

Troopers from the Troop H barracks, which covers Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, and Perry counties, investigated 23 crashes, four of which involved alcohol, according to the statistics. There were no fatalities, but nine people were injured. Troopers made 35 DUI arrests, cited 318 people for speeding, and issued 81 total citations for seat belt or child seat violations.

In Troop J, which covers Lancaster, York and Chester counties, troopers investigated 16 crashes, none of which were fatal. There were four people injured, and alcohol was a factor in two of the crashes, the statistics say. Police made 21 DUI arrests, cited 218 people for speeding, and issued 13 child seat or seat belt citations.

In Troop L, which covers Lebanon, Schuylkill and Berks counties, troopers investigated 22 crashes. No one was killed, though one person was injured. Alcohol was a factor in six of the crashes. Troopers made 20 DUI arrests, issued 184 speeding citations, and cited 17 drivers for either child seat or seat belt violations.
