HARRISBURG, Pa. — After six years of using a gray color scheme on their marked patrol vehicles, Pennsylvania State Police are switching to a new look this year, the agency announced.
The decision was made to change the color scheme from gray to white, which makes the vehicles more visible and improves trooper safety, the agency said.
The decals used on the old gray color scheme will remain the same, the agency said.
The first vehicles to use the new white color scheme are the 263 Dodge Durango marked vehicles, according to State Police. They are gradually being switched at a rate of 20 to 30 vehicles per week.
PSP has ordered new Chevy Tahoe and Ford Police Interceptor vehicles for this year, all of which will feature the new color scheme, the agency said.
The number of new vehicles being implemented this year and their color choices are:
- 93 Ford (white/marked)
- 100 Ford (conventional colors/unmarked patrol)
- 140 Chevy (white/marked)
- 64 Chevy (conventional colors/unmarked patrol)
"The command staff wanted to provide a mix of patrol vehicles so that the troopers have viable options to utilize, depending on needs at the troop/station level," PSP's communications office said.
The new vehicles are expected to be implemented by the end of the summer. Those 397 new patrol cars will supplement the 260 Durango SUVs from last year’s order, PSP said.
PSP has roughly 1,185 marked patrol vehicles and 305 unmarked patrol vehicles in its fleet, the agency said.
