YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Pennsylvania is offering free air conditioning units to residents who received LIHEAP and weatherization assistance through federal funds.
The funds for those units, however, are running dry in the central Pennsylvania area.
The York County Planning Commission says it is already out of funds to administer the program for the rest of the year.
"These program funds became available October 1, 2023, and included heating and cooling assistance," a statement from the Commission read. "The Planning Commission’s Weatherization Program assisted over 200 households with heating unit repairs/replacements this funding year. If those units included air conditioning/cooling systems in need of repair, they were completed at the same time. All remaining funds available after the heating crisis season have since been exhausted as the program was able to provide cooling assistance for an additional 29 homes."
The program for Dauphin, Cumberland, Adams and Franklin Counties, which is administered by the South Central Community Action Program in Gettysburg, has very little money left for the remainder of the year.
SCCAP CEO Megan Shreve told FOX43 via text that its original budget of $47,000 was spent in May, and that it had to request an additional $46,000 to cover outstanding requests and jobs.
The air conditioner program is now in its third year and offers two air conditioning units to individuals or families who received LIHEAP funds from November to April or are currently receiving weatherization assistance.
More than 3,000 air conditioning units were provided last year through the program.
