SHERMANS DALE, Pa. — Communities across central Pennsylvania are under a severe weather watch, as heavy rain and strong winds cross the region.
In Carroll Township, Perry County, the heavy rains caused some people to turn their eyes toward the nearby creeks and streams.
“We have a creek that runs through our backyard, so we have to worry about it a little bit," said Teresa Haberkamp, a resident of Shermans Dale.
Haberkamp has been living in Carroll Township for over 20 years. She said parts of the nearby Sherman’s Creek have flooded in the past—and is worried what the rain will do to current water levels.
“We did get a lot of snow, so that’s going to drain off real fast with the rain," said Haberkamp. "So, we do have a little concern about it now.”
Perry County’s Emergency Management Agency says officials are currently monitoring water levels in the Juniata River and Sherman’s Creek. The agency does not expect any significant flooding throughout Perry County.
However, Richard Fultz, the director of Perry County's Emergency Management Agency, said some parts of Sherman’s Creek may see some minor flooding.
“Sherman’s Creek in some low-lying areas might reach an action stage, but we’re aware of the areas that normally flood during these weather events," said Fultz.
Local municipalities have been working to clear sewage drains, to prevent water from flooding local roads. Emergency management crews are also prepared to assist local communities throughout the weather event.
“We really don’t anticipate the need for evacuations and shelters, but we’re prepared to react to it," said Fultz.
