LANCASTER, Pa. — Two people who were riding in a horse and buggy are still in the hospital recovering from being rear ended by a Ford Explorer two days ago.

State Police say the crash injured four people in total, two of whom were already discharged from the hospital with minor scrapes and lacerations. The two who remain in the hospital are suffering from possible broken bones and head injuries, troopers said.

The July 11 crash occurred around 9:53 p.m. on Old Philadelphia Pike just east of Martin Road, in Salisbury Township, Lancaster County.

A State Police investigation determined that the driver of a 2020 Ford Explorer became distracted while looking at the GPS on his phone while driving. The motorist allegedly told troopers that when he looked back at the road, the horse and buggy was directly in front of him.

The driver allegedly attempted to brake, but was unable to slow down in time to avoid striking the buggy. The buggy overturned upon collision and all four occupants were ejected onto the road.

The two discharged patients were released yesterday.

Pennsylvania State Police - Lancaster Patrol Unit was assisted on scene by Gordonville Fire and EMS Company, White Horse Fire and EMS and Christiana Community Ambulance.
