Charges filed following officer-involved shooting on Cameron Street in Harrisburg

The incident occurred shortly after noon on March 13 near the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex at Cameron and Maclay streets, a city spokesperson said.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Update, March 14: The Dauphin County District Attorney's Office and the County Criminal Investigative Division have taken over the investigation regarding an officer-involved shooting in Harrisburg.

The decision was made as the incident involved an officer from the Harrisburg Bureau of Police.

According to District Attorney Fran Chardo, the suspect, identified as Jacob B. Bucher III, was wanted for firing shots earlier in the day.

“There were other offenses charged, violation to the informed firearms act, and we brought those charges, and they are pending and he’s in the hospital and cannot yet be arraigned," Chardo said.

At 12:16 p.m. on March 13, an officer identified Bucher entering a silver mini-van and radioed for backup. At the intersection of Cameron and Maclay Streets, the officer activated his emergency lights as Bucher allegedly exited the mini-van, which was stopped in the far right turn lane.

According to the affidavit, Bucher was given commands to stop but ignored them, walking away from the police. He then allegedly pulled out a firearm from his clothing, pointed it at the officer and fired multiple shots.

The officer was not struck and returned fire, hitting Bucher once. However, Bucher allegedly continued to ignore verbal commands and gave chase on foot.

According to the affidavit, Bucher was taken into custody after an officer fired his taser, striking the suspect. He allegedly continued to resist while being taken into custody.

At the scene, officers recovered an Iver Johnson 38-caliber firearm. The five-shot revolver reportedly had five empty cartridges.

According to the Dauphin County District Attorney's Office, Bucher has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault of a law enforcement officer, recklessly endangering another person and violations of the Uniform Firearms Act.

The intersection of Cameron and Maclay Streets was highly populated at the time, meaning Bucher's alleged actions endangered the lives of multiple civilians.

According to Chardo, a full review of the officer-involved shooting is being investigated.
