Police confirm fireworks were in 'suspicious package' left outside Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center

The outside of the package reportedly had handwritten messages to NPS officials on it.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Update, June 2: Police have confirmed what was inside the suspicious package found at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center.

Officer Eric Yost with the Cumberland Township Police Department stated that the contents were identified as "fireworks that produce smoke." A picture of the suspect was also released, with police noting that he has still been yet to be identified.

Previously: Police are investigating a "suspicious package" found at Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center on Tuesday morning.

According to Cumberland Township Police Chief Matthew Trostel, authorities are investigating the package and taking an abundance of caution while they investigate.

Officials were notified of a suspicious package left at the main entrance of the Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center. The outside of the package reportedly had handwritten messages to NPS officials on it. 

Out of an abundance of caution, the building was evacuated and the area was cleared. 

The Pennsylvania State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal team responded and took an X-ray of the package. The contents were safely removed from the scene and additional areas were searched. 

Around noon, The Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center re-opened, the Gettysburg National Military Park said Tuesday.
