'We’re hoping for the best' | Preparing for severe storms from Tropical Storm Debby

Newville Borough residents spent the day buying groceries and preparing for another round of severe weather to hit the area.

NEWVILLE, Pa. — Dozens of shoppers were grabbing groceries at Saylor's Market in Newville Borough, Cumberland County, as Tropical Storm Debby makes its way toward central Pennsylvania.

"I'm just getting milk and things I need to have for a couple of days," said Jennifer Crouse. "Plus, I have some stuff in the freezer, so I'm prepared.

Ryan Murphy said he's packing enough food for his family in case there's any flooding along Bloserville and Potato Road.

"Last year it flooded pretty bad and we couldn’t get in and out, and there was no way around it," said Murphy. "So, we’re getting a couple of things so we can last for the next couple of days.”

Meanwhile, residents of the nearby Conodoguinet Mobile Estates are bracing for another round of severe weather.

“Yeah, that makes us a little weary," said Chris Ward. "But we’ll see how it goes.”

Ward said three of his neighbors had their homes destroyed by strong winds and fallen trees during an intense severe storm on July 18. He said he’s worried about how much rain his neighborhood will get through Friday evening.

“[The rain] is softening the ground a little too much, so a lot of the trees here, unfortunately, give way," said Ward. "That’s our biggest concern, it’s the water.”

Ward keeps a generator in his shed in case the power goes out in his home. He said he and his neighbors hope they can ride out the storm without any issues.

“We’re hoping for the best," he said.
