Resources for those experiencing homelessness in central Pennsylvania

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Homelessness can strike at any time and can happen to anyone. 

For those in central Pennsylvania who find themselves in the situation, there are plenty of organizations and non-profits in the area willing to help. FOX43 compiled a small list of shelters across the area for immediate help. 

Adams/Franklin Counties

Adams County Homeless Shelter: This is a low-barrier family-only shelter for those in Adams County. The shelter can serve up to ten families at any time and typically houses children. A family's stay is typically 14-30 days. The shelter is located at 151 Read N. Stratton Street in Gettysburg. For a pre-screening or to ask about available space, call (717) 337-2413. 

Franklin County Homeless Shelter: Another low-barrier emergency shelter that serves individuals who are experiencing homelessness. An individual or family's stay is typically 14-30 days and those staying at the shelter will be focused on finding affordable housing. The shelter is located at 223 S. Main Street in Chambersburg. For a pre-screening or to ask about available space, call (717) 267-3669. 

Cumberland County

Salvation Army: Call (717) 233-6755 if you need help with food, housing, transportation, job assistance and general casework. 

Cumberland County Housing and Redevelopment Authorities: If you are currently experiencing homelessness, dial 2-1-1, dial toll-free (855) 567-5341, or text your zip code to 898211 for information, screening, and referral. For an onsite assessment, Carlisle CARES is located at 50 West Penn Street in Carlisle. 

Cumberland County Homeless Assistance Program: This program aims to help people find and maintain affordable housing and help those experiencing homelessness find refuge and care. Located at 1100 Claremont Road in Carlisle, those interested can reach out by phone at (717) 240-7809 or email rentalassistance@cumberlandcountypa.gov.

Dauphin County 

Bethesda Mission: Located at 611 Reily Street in Harrisburg, this organization offers free dinners for the public every night at 4:30 p.m. Additionally, the rescue mission is hosting a food bank from Oct. 23 until Dec. 13. The organization provides those experiencing homelessness with shelter. The men's shelter is located at 611 Reilly Street in Harrisburg and can be reached at (717) 257-4440. The women's shelter can be reached at (717) 257-447

Capital Area Coalition on Homelessness: CACH is a voluntary collaborative effort to address homelessness in the City of Harrisburg and the area of Dauphin County. For more information, call (717) 255-3000. 

The Delta Community: This organization provides educational and housing programs for homeless, single-parent families working toward self-sufficiency. DELTA provides up to 24 months of housing support in the form of rent subsidies. It is located at 2930 Derry Street and can be reached at (717) 232-2970. 

Lancaster County 

Clare House: A transitional housing program where mothers and children experiencing homelessness can receive safety, support and respect. Can be reached at (717) 291-8967. 

Tenfold: Whether you're experiencing homelessness, need help budgeting, are considering homeownership, or are somewhere in between, Tenfold's team is ready to help. The Lancaster office is at 308 East King Street and applicants can contact the organization at (717) 397-5182. 

YWCA Lancaster's Kepler Hall Residency: This organization provides shelter for women who come from abusive relationships, can no longer afford their current housing or are transitioning from drug and alcohol treatment programs. To learn more about the program, applicants can visit YWCA Lancaster's front desk during normal business hours or contact Raeanna Metzger at (717) 869-5025. 

Water Street Mission: Each day this organization provides food, clothing and shelter to hundreds. Over 300 meals are served in the dining hall and over 170 guests find shelter. To learn more, call (717) 393-7709. 

Lebanon County

Lebanon County Christian Ministries: The FRESH Start Emergency Shelter and Resource Center provides homeless families and individuals the resources and training needed to empower personal sustainability while providing a safe place to sleep. Any families or individuals facing an immediate housing crisis should call (717) 272-4400 or visit 250 S. 7th Street in Lebanon. 

Lebanon Habitat for Humanity: For short-term or permanent housing here are some resources to contact: 

York County 

Bell Family Shelter: This organization offers 30-day emergency shelter for homeless families. The shelter can house up to forty people per night and provides basic needs for food, clothing and shelter. To reach out, call (717) 845-9536. 

Veteran's Helping Hand: Located at 412 West King Street in York, this organization provides emergency shelter to help veterans and their families in need when they fall on hard times.
