New park coming to honor volunteer firefighters

Plans for a commemorative park were unveiled on Thursday as part of the 70th Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters Convention.

POTTSVILLE, Pa. — The city of Pottsville unveiled plans for a commemorative park on Thursday, all part of the 70th Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters Convention.

The construction of "Discovery Park" is set to begin on Friday, along West Market Street in the city's downtown.

Plans include a public amphitheater and a common area. All tied together with a multi-story mural highlighting the history of firefighting in Pottsville.

"The first step of the park was the creation of this mural on the Discovery Park wall, which was created by Megan Price, and with the inspiration of Mike GLORE to commemorate the history of the city fire department," said Tom Palamar, Pottsville City Administrator.

"There's a lot of ideas going in it there's it's called Discovery Park, so we're thinking about the future, we're thinking about learning, but we're also honoring our past with a volunteer firefighter for the history. That's all coming into it, so I really wanted to be able to tie those two ideas together cohesively," added Megan Price, Mural Artist.

A parade will take place this Saturday in Pottsville and will feature dozens of fire trucks for the 70th Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters Convention.
