YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Officials from the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, along with Fairview Township Police and Fire Departments, are still looking for a missing person who was last seen Saturday afternoon.
“At approximately 5 p.m. [on Aug. 10], emergency units from York and Cumberland Counties were dispatched to the area of the 1000 block of Limekiln Road for a water rescue. Shortly before the dispatch was received, a male juvenile was separated from a kayak while navigating a section of the Yellow Breeches Creek,” said Mike Parker, Communications Director.
Information about the missing juvenile is minimal, but officials say he was kayaking with a group before he went underwater and didn’t resurface.
Friday’s severe weather might’ve played a role, officials said.
“The conditions were not ideal across many parts of Pennsylvania yesterday, due to the meteorological event that occurred. We were seeing heavy rains as a result of the storm coming up the coast, which did effect many parts of Pennsylvania,” Parker said.
Several agencies across five counties are assisting with the search.
Officials are treating the incident as a missing person search.
“The York County coroner arrived on the scene for consultation with the command post only today as the juvenile has not been located at this point and that search continues,” Parker said.
Crews are searching across a 1.5-mile perimeter in the 1000 block of Limekiln Road and are using sonar and drones.
People are asked to avoid the area as the search continues.
“There is no book that says you have to search for this amount of time specifically before that determination is made, but as long as were able to do that we’re going to continue to do what we can,” said Brandon Freistat, Emergency Management Coordinator for Fairview Township.
