CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — A shelter-in-place order has been initiated at Letterkenny Army Depot due to a reported hazardous materials incident outside the facility's property, officials said Thursday.
The incident was reported shortly after 9:30 a.m. Letterkenny Army Depot announced the shelter-in-place order across its property at about 9:45, according to Todd Wivell with the facility's Public Affairs Office.
The order was lifted at 12:45 p.m., Wivell said.
"Earlier today, an incident occurred at a facility leased to a private company outside of Letterkenny Army Depot property," the facility said in a post on its Facebook page. "However, a shelter-in-place is in order across Letterkenny Army Depot, and we are taking 100% accountability of all personnel."
Franklin County emergency service personnel responded to the scene, the post said.
The incident occurred at Alex C. Fergusson, LLC, also known as AFCO Food Safety Services, located on Development Avenue, which is near the Letterkenny Army Depot's helipad. The business provides food safety, water treatment, cleaning/sanitation, and technical services to businesses in the food, beverage, and hospitality industries, according to its website.
Wivell said it was "some sort of leak" at AFCO that created a yellowish plume that spread through the air toward the Depot, triggering the shelter-in-place order.
No one at the Letterkenny facility was injured, Wivell said.
According to WellSpan officials, 19 individuals were evaluated for exposure to chemicals. As of July 12, all individuals have been treated and released from the hospital.
OSHA is investigating the leak.
FOX43 reached out to AFCO for additional details about the incident, but no one was immediately available to comment.
This is a developing story. FOX43 will have more information as it becomes available.
