Shippensburg University fraternity hosts voting awareness event

The Kappa Omega chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi at Shippensburg University wanted to inform fellow students about the importance of voting in future elections.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — Members of a Shippensburg University fraternity wanted their fellow students to know the power of voting.

The school's Kappa Omega Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity hosted a Registration Blitz on Thursday. It was held in the univeristy's Ceddia Union Building and Gilbert Hall.

The goal of the event was to engage with Shippensburg University students and discuss the importance their votes will have on future elections. Students interested in learning more about the voting process could visit a table and even register to vote if they have not yet.

“Today we’re out here trying to inspire change and really get college Students registered to vote," said Tymere Harris, member of Shippensburg's Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. "For those who are already registered vote, they get to hear a little bit about the election possibilities and the candidates and really just know everything that comes with this election as well."

Shippensburg also shows students the importance of voting through ShipVotes

According to the Shippensburg University website, ShipVotes is a group of students, faculty, staff and administrators whose goal is to increase electoral participation among students and emphasize the importance of democratic engagement through civic education at the school. To achieve this, its tactics include holding registration events and visibility efforts on camps, social media campaigns, art contests, and organizing between students.

Students who vote on Shippensburg's campus are encouraged to use boxes five and six on Old Main Drive and Lancaster Drive, respectively.
