Small businesses serve as vendors at York State Fair

The York State Fair is currently in full swing and with all the excitement of rides and contests, fairgoers can take a moment to visit small businesses.

YORK, Pa. — The York State Fair is currently in full swing and with all the excitement of rides and contests, fairgoers can take a moment to visit the numerous small businesses that are showcasing their products at the event.

With over 100 vendors occupying every nook and cranny of the fairgrounds, these small businesses are hoping to attract the attention of fair attendees. For many of them, a single visit from a fairgoer could make a substantial impact on their business.

“Come out to the State Fair and check out all of the buildings because there’s a lot of people that put in hard work,” said Jacob Glatfelter, the Assistant Store Manager at Whitecomb Farm Market.

Visitors can find a diverse array of offerings at the fair, catering to the mind, body, and soul.

From metaphysical earth energies crystals and healing stones at The Selene Underground, to freshly brewed sweet tea at Tiki Tea, and a delightful selection of sweet treats at Whitecomb Farm Market, there is something to cater to every fairgoer's needs.

Many of these small businesses have deep roots in the local community or within their own families.

For instance, Whitecomb Farm Market, which started as a fruit stand over 30 years ago, has evolved into a thriving business with a deli, bakery, and greenhouses. Similarly, Tiki Tea has been a family endeavor since its inception in 1975 in Memphis, Tennessee.

“I was born and raised in this business,” said Tammy Long, owner of Tiki Tea. She added, “My grandmother used to come to the fair and she was called the ‘Duck Pond Lady” and worked this fair for about 50 to 60 years.”

The vendors emphasized the importance of local support in sustaining their businesses. They acknowledged that with the backing of their local communities, showcasing their products on such a grand scale is possible. As one vendor mentioned, the support from the local community is crucial, especially in the face of competition from larger corporations.

“We literally depend on our fellow Americans, so we can pay our bills, put a roof over our heads, feed our children,” said Melissa Martin, owner of Selene Underground. She added, “It’s important that small businesses get help because we need you, we’re just little people trying to survive in this big world.”

The revenue generated from events like the York State Fair plays a significant role in the livelihoods of these small businesses. Whether it's supporting their families or reinvesting in their businesses to fuel their passion, many vendors rely on the income they generate from fairs like these.

The thriving presence of these small businesses at the York State Fair is a testament to their resilience and the support they receive from their local communities.

By visiting these vendors and appreciating their products, fairgoers are not only enjoying unique offerings but also contributing to the success of small businesses within and beyond the event.
