YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Police say passengers of a Maryland-registered Dodge Durango are lucky to be alive after a bullet passed through the car’s rear window while a family of three sat inside.
“One of those people was a one-and-half-year-old baby in the backseat in a car seat, was traveling southbound in the area of the Market Street exit, when something came crashing through the back of the windshield,” said Trooper James Grothey, Public Information Officer of Pennsylvania State Police.
The incident happened around mile marker 18.8 just after 4:30 p.m. on Sunday while the family was traveling home to Maryland.
When Pennsylvania State Police arrived at the scene, they discovered the bullet also struck the driver’s rear-view mirror and front windshield.
“To find out it was a bullet; it could’ve definitely hit somebody and struck them and killed them,” Trooper Grothey said.
No one was hurt and it’s unknown if the incident was a case of road rage or not.
“We’re looking at all angles whether it came from another vehicle, whether it came from somebody that was backyard shooting,” Trooper Grothey said.
The bullet is expected to be tested in Harrisburg to determine what kind of gun it was fired from.
Investigators are also searching for any video evidence from nearby home cameras and are communicating with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for more information.
While road rage hasn’t been confirmed, police still encourage people to practice safe driving to avoid potentially dangerous situations.
“Ultimately slow down, try to let that person pass you, get around you, if you have to pull off on an exit, whatever you can to do to get away from that vehicle and immediately, as soon as you can, call 911,” Trooper Grothey said.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact state police directly by calling 717 – 428 – 1011.
