LANCASTER, Pa. — A State Police trooper serving with Lancaster County's Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) was injured in a shooting in Lancaster Wednesday morning, a Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) spokesperson said in a press release.

The PSP corporal, whose identity is not being released, suffered a non-life-threatening injury while assisting with warrant service as part of an ongoing investigation, the spokesperson said.

The incident occurred at 6:19 a.m. on the 600 block of East Fulton Street, according to police. The warrant was part of an ongoing armed robbery investigation and was to be executed on multiple storage units, troopers stated.

After troopers announced their presence and intention to execute the warrant, they began using various tools to open the storage units. While doing so, gunshots reportedly rang out from inside one of the units.

As a result, a corporal from SERT was struck in the arm. He was transported to Lancaster General Hospital for treatment.

Police did not return fire, authorities said. The suspect, Alfredo Maldonada-Gonzalez, 40, was taken into custody.

During a subsequent search of the storage unit, troopers located a stolen handgun, which was believed to be the weapon Maldonada-Gonzalez used.

He has been charged with attempted criminal homicide of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, assault on law enforcement, discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure, possession of a firearm, recklessly endangering another person and receiving stolen property.

The State Police corporal is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery, according to police.
