STEELTON, Pa. — Thanks to a charitable donation by a non-profit group and the sponsorship of two women, Steelton Borough Police K9 Officers Beny and Noro will be a little safer when they're out on patrol, the police department said Thursday.
The K9 officers both received bullet- and stab-protective vests, provided by Vested Interest in K9s, a Maine-based charity whose mission is to provide the vests and other assistance to K9 officers in police departments and other law enforcement agencies, the department said.
Sponsored by Kathie M. Smith, of Springfield, Delaware County, and Marjorie Healey of Venice, Florida, the vests are worth between $1,744 and $2,283, police say. Each vest is custom-fitted to the dog they're designed for.
Beny's vest, sponsored by Smith, is embroidered with the slogan "Born to Love-Trained to Serve-Loyal Always."
Noro's vest, sponsored by Healey, reads "In memory of Edward M. Healey USMC Ret."
Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 3,500 U.S. made, custom fitted, NIJ certified protective vests in 50 states, through private and corporate donations, at a value of $6.9 million dollars.
