Lancaster County residents react to storm damage that left hundreds without power

More than 1,200 people were left without power for most of Wednesday.

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — Generators and chainsaws hummed throughout Christiana Borough, Lancaster County on Wednesday, as people worked to clean up from severe storms last night.

“I know my stuff in the refrigerator is probably spoiled by now," said Chris Roda.

Utility crews worked throughout the day to restore power for those sitting in the dark. For most of the day on Wednesday, more than 1,200 people were without power.

Regina Johnson said she and her neighbors went without power since 8 p.m. on Tuesday night.

“We thought it would come back, because we honestly never lost power for long periods of time," said Johnson. "We’ve been here 17 years, and this is the first time we’ve ever lost power this long.”

The storm knocked down two trees along Upper Valley Road and South Bridge Street in Christiana. The branches knocked down power lines and blocked traffic from those roads.

Chris Roda, who lives a couple hundred feet from where a tree crashed down, said it was the most intense storm he’s ever seen.

“I saw the tree down right away and I saw all the wires down, and at first it looked apocalyptic to me because I’d never seen this kind of damage," said Roda. "I watch the Weather Channel and people in hurricane areas experience damage like this.”

Meanwhile, Aimi Mathis was left searching for ways to keep her and her five-month-old Pomsky puppy cool, as they were left without any AC in her house.

“They have such thick fur and everything, so I kept wetting her down and wetting our heads down," said Mathis. "Luckily, we didn’t have a heat warning.”

According to PPL, Christiana residents were expected to have their power fully restored by 11 on Wednesday. Mathis got power back in her house around 5 and is hoping her neighbors will also have their power restored without any issues.

“The joke around here is that we’re going to lose it again in five hours, so fingers crossed we’re not going to do that," said Mathis.
