YORK, Pa. — On Saturday, volunteers loaded hundreds of bags in the back of a U-Haul for the 5th Annual Veteran's Day Stuff the Truck event.
“When veterans have sacrificed so much, they shouldn’t come home in need of anything," said Sandie Walker.
Walker is the president of Mr. Sandy's Homeless Veterans Center, which works with around 150 veterans in York County each year. She said the event helps provide personal care and cleaning products to homeless veterans and veterans living in transitional housing.
“When we’re able to fill that gap and give the veterans toilet paper, dish liquid, laundry detergent, that’s saving money that goes to something more important, like keeping a roof over your head," said Walker.
Members from the Zeredatha-White Rose Lodge were stationed across York and Adams counties to help collect items for the drive. The supplies were donated by shoppers at 13 different Dollar Tree locations.
“I think veterans have found a place in the heart of York Countians," said Phil Aubel.
Aubel is a member of the White Rose Lodge and served more than 25 years in the Army. He believes this event helps spotlight the issue of homeless veterans across the Commonwealth.
“There are those of us who served who are without a shelter over their head or clothes on their back," said Aubel. "People need to know that so they can come out and support us when we do things like this.”
By loading up the truck, volunteers are serving the people who served our country.
“When veterans are taken care of, our country is better," said Walker.
