DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. — A years long saga on the dispute for the mascot and name for a Dauphin County school district has finally come to close.

On Friday, Susquehanna Township School District announced that its school board has approved the use of black bear imagery and "Mato" the Black Bear as the official mascot for the district.

However, the district's athletic teams will maintain the "Indians" name.

The mascot will make its official debut at the school's varsity football game against Big Spring High School at 7:00 p.m. at Roscoe Warner Field.

"We are thrilled to welcome Mato into the fabric of our school's traditions. The black bear represents strength, perseverance, and courage we strive to instill in our students," said Dr. Tamara Willis, Superintendent of Susquehanna Township School District, via a press release. "Tonight's football game marks the beginning of a new chapter, and we invite the community to join us in celebrating this momentous occasion."

There had been consideration into moving on from the "Indians" logo and nickname dating back to 2020, and in recent years, the nickname had been voted back into use.

Now, the district will move on with a new logo, mascot, but a familiar name.
