The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced it will hold a public meeting in Maryland later this week to discuss a plan to reopen the Three Mile Island nuclear power facility.

The meeting will also discuss a potential name change to TMI, site of the United States' worst nuclear disaster in 1979. Constellation Energy, which owns the site, is considering the idea of changing its name to Crane Clean Energy Center.

Friday's meeting will give attendees the chance "to observe the NRC performing its regulatory function (by) discussing regulatory issues," the NRC said.

Those who attend will have the chance to ask questions or provide comments after the business portion of the meeting concludes, according to the NRC.

The meeting will be held at One White Flint, 11555 Rockville Pike in Rockville, MD, at 9 a.m. Public comments are scheduled to begin at about 10:10 a.m., the NRC said.

The public can also join the meeting remotely by calling (301) 576-2978, using the passcode 759137601#, or by going here and using Meeting No. 250 970 214 041 and the password 6JBzJV to join.

Earlier this year, Constellation Energy and Microsoft announced plans to potentially reopen Three Mile Island to power Microsoft’s artificial intelligence program

Three Mile Island was shut down in 2019, just over 40 years after the facility's Unit 2 reactor had a partial meltdown. Unit 2 is still in the process of being decommissioned, and is not affected by the plan to reopen the facility.

Unit 1, which is a fully independent facility located next to Unit 2, would be the reactor used should the site reopen.

The Biden administration last month announced its support for the plan to reopen Three Mile Island.
