Two suspects accused of taking stolen construction vehicle for joy ride through North York park

The two unidentified suspects damaged park benches, fences and trash cans throughout Kauffman Park early on Sunday morning.

YORK, Pa. — Northern York Regional Police are searching for two people accused of stealing a construction vehicle and damaging a nearby park early Sunday morning.

According to police, two people were seen stealing a milling machine from a construction site along N. George St. and Eighth Ave. in North York. The suspects then drove nearly half a mile before turning into Kauffman Park.

Police say the suspects then drove over the basketball court and damaged park benches, fences, trash cans and signs.

Shaquille Otto, who frequently takes his children to Kauffman Park, said the incident makes him worry about the safety of the park.

“If it happens at one park, why wouldn’t it happen at any other park?” said Otto. “I take my kids to parks all around, but this is my favorite park because of the safety. Now this happens and it makes it unsafe.”

Melissa Witmer, who lives across the street from Kauffman Park, said the park is very popular with families across North York. She said she was devastated to see the damage done to the area.

“A lot of kids come to play basketball. I take my grandchildren down there to play on the swings," said Witmer. “Why would you want to destroy things that kids get enjoyment [from]?”

FOX43 reached out to Kinsley Construction for comment about the vehicle that was stolen from them but has not heard back from them at this time.

The North York Borough manager said they are still waiting for a full assessment of the damage caused by the two suspects.

Northern York Regional Police are asking anyone who knows the two suspects to call (717) 467-TELL or email tips@nycrpd.org.
