YORK, Pa. — On Saturday, hundreds of cars lined up at the York Fairgrounds to receive holiday meals.
“Thanksgiving is really a time of giving," said Kris Pollick, the director of the "YorkGiving" meal distribution.
Dozens of volunteers with the Catholic Harvest Food Pantry loaded cars with Thanksgiving groceries for the annual "YorkGiving" meal distribution. Each car was packed with a turkey, potatoes and other tasty Thanksgiving staples.
Kris Pollick said this year's food drive will provide Thanksgiving meals to more than 1,600 families.
“Most of our families are working paycheck-to-paycheck, so they’re really in need of assistance for a Thanksgiving meal because it’s an added expense not everyone can afford," said Pollick.
Food logistics volunteers with Catholic Harvest Food Pantry say they have been preparing for the meal distribution for months. In total, around 40,000 pounds of food were given away at the drive-thru.
“It’s a big effort," said Jim Fitzgibbons, a volunteer with Catholic Harvest Food Pantry. "With 1,600 families, and it could go to 1,900 or 2,000, we have to be prepared.”
“There is a good meal, and maybe several meals, for families," said George Reynolds, a drive-thru volunteer.
Reynolds has volunteered with "YorkGiving" for the past eight years. He says he is grateful to help families get a proper holiday dinner.
“It's beneficial that we who can make a contribution do so," said Reynolds.
The "YorkGiving" meal distribution will continue on Sunday when volunteers deliver Thanksgiving meals directly to people's homes.
