YORK COUNTY, Pa. — York County Coroner Pam Gay announced that she will be retiring at the end of her current term in January 2026.

Gay is in her third term as York County's coroner and will have served York's community for 12 years when she retires.

Gay started her position in 2014 where she has modernized York County's Coroner's Office throughout the years, including the heights of the COVID-19 pandemic opioid pandemic.

“I have been humbly honored to serve the people of York County during what will be my three terms as their Coroner," said Gay in a press release. "There have been many improvements in staffing and office modernization since I began in 2014, and we were finally able to provide the community with the office and morgue facility that was so desperately needed."

Gay stated that she is proud of her employees' commitment to bringing justice to those who have died and bringing compassion to survivors, as well as praising the volunteers who provide outreach to the decedent's next of kin.

Gay also reflected on her past three terms serving as coroner and the people who supported her efforts.

"I am grateful to the York community and the County Commissioners who have supported our budget and efforts through the years," said Gay. "There is still a lot of work to complete in the next year, and many more people to serve, and I will continue to do that fully during this next year.”

Gay has endorsed her Chief Deputy Coroner, Tania Zech, in her 2025 Republican campaign for York County Coroner to transition over the position in 2025.

“I believe that Tania Zech is well-prepared to assume the role of York County’s Coroner in 2026. She has been serving along with me in her current role as Chief Deputy Coroner since 2020 and had been a Deputy Coroner for four years prior to that," stated Gay. "She has always given our decedents and their families the highest priority, which is extremely important to me. I know she will continue to improve and modernize the office and morgue. I wholeheartedly support her and believe she will be a great Coroner for York County.”
