York County nonprofit empowers individuals with disabilities to vote

A nonprofit is helping people with developmental disabilities prepare to vote this November and staff say it starts with getting registered.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — With election day less than two months away, people at Penn-Mar Human Services are eager to hit the polls.

“I’m really excited about it,” said resident Barbara Leckrone.

Lisa Hartley is the residential supervisor and works with residents one-on-one.

She waits for them to express an interest in voting before providing information on how to do it.

“What they get from social media and family and TV, they’ve already formed their own opinions, and we just provide them with any information they ask for in a way they are going to understand,” Hartley said.

She uses what she calls a three-E philosophy.

“Education, exposure, and experience and that’s part of the whole voting process,” Hartley explained.

It’s a process Angel Myers will experience for the first time.

“I’m looking for someone who is good and can tell the whole truth and be nice about it,” Myers said.

Myers is expected to vote in person for the first time on November 5.

She registered to vote earlier this year.

Voting in-person is something Hartley and her team encourage all residents to do.

“We want to show them how the process works, they talk to the people that work there and they take their time with them, they show them the machines and how to work them and have supported them in voting for their candidate,” Hartley said.

“I like to meet new people; it makes me feel happy,” Leckrone added.

That feeling of happiness is felt by all.

“They are just so thrilled to have this opportunity like everybody else does and we take for granted that this is something we do all the time,” Hartley said.

Penn-Mar is a nonprofit that supports people to live courageously in pursuit of their best life.
