YORK, Pa. — The York County Planning Commission is looking for public input on open space, farmland preservation, natural resource protection, trail development, and connectivity as part of an effort to update the Open Space and Trails component of the York County Comprehensive Plan.

It is asking the public to complete a 10-minute online survey to provide input on these issues.

The survey will be available until Sept. 30, the Planning Commission said.

"York County's goal is to preserve natural and cultural assets, improve recreational spaces, and create a cohesive, interconnected network of greenways and trails," the Planning Commission said in a press release. "This survey helps gather public feedback on creating a plan that helps everyone."

To assist those who complete the survey, the Planning Commission provided the following definitions of terms they'll see:

Open Space: Land that is mostly undeveloped and set aside for recreational, agricultural, historic/cultural, or conservation purposes. It can preserve scenic vistas, environmental quality, and/or maintain community character. Open space can be accessible to the public or can be private properties with restricted access. Examples of open space include parks, greenways, trails, farmland, pastures, wildlife habitat areas, woodlands, streams, or rivers.

Trails: Linear passages that can traverse unique geological features, loop water bodies, connect people, parks, historic sites and natural areas, and provide recreational and/or alternative transportation opportunities. Trails can be on land or water, vary in length, and accommodate a variety of users. Land trails are sometimes referred to as greenways while water trails are sometimes known as "blueways."

Benefits of Open Space and Trails

Boost in property values: Trails and open spaces make York County a more attractive place to live, work, and play.

Support local agriculture: Open spaces help sustain York County's critical farming industry, providing fresh local food and jobs.

Protect our environment: Open spaces reduce flooding, protect wildlife, and improve air quality.

Enhance community well-being: Trails and parks offer places to exercise, de-stress, and connect with neighbors.
