Communities across York County clean up after Tuesday's snowstorm

Thousands of people were left without power and several trees and powerlines were knocked over due to the winter weather.

NEWBERRYTOWN, Pa. — Snow cleanup is plowing along after winter weather hit communities across York County on Tuesday morning. The early morning storm made driving difficult for people leaving for work, and people attempting to plow the roads.

“Early this morning it was bad because it came down fast," said Ralph Strouse, who operates a snowplow out of Mount Wolfe. “It got so bad so quick, it really jammed us up trying to get around because the roads were so icy.”

People across Newberry Township are now left to clean off the mess left behind along driveways and sidewalks.

“It’s wet, heavy, and with the plows kicking it over, it’s all nasty," said Jordan Stewart, who was helping shovel snow along Old Trail Road in Newberry Township.

The heavy and wet snow is still causing several issues along backroads in Newberry Township. The snow has already taken down trees and powerlines.

“It has the ability to do that, to weigh on limbs and powerlines and bring them down," said Ted Czech, the public information officer for York County's Office of Emergency Management. "I know it’s hard to believe, but it does it and we see that quite often.”

According to MetEd, more than 2,300 were left without power across York County after the snowstorm. The power company could not tell FOX43 when the power would be fully restored.

Czech said crews remain out and about trying to clear roads and restore power for people across the county. Even as the snow melts, he urges people to drive carefully and use caution if they approach any downed wires or trees.

“If you come across a tree down or power wires and you think you can make it, just turn around. Turn around and take another route," said Czech.
