YORK HAVEN, Pa. — A York County couple has been charged in the alleged robbery and assault of a wheelchair-bound man in Newberry Township last month, police said.
Amanda Hughes, 31, and Julio Rivera, 33, both of York Haven, are charged with multiple felonies in the alleged incident, which police say occurred last month.
Hughes is charged with three felony counts of robbery—threaten immediate serious bodily injury, two felony counts of theft by unlawful taking, one felony count of access device fraud, three felony counts of receiving stolen property, and misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats, theft, simple assault, access device fraud and unauthorized use of a vehicle, according to Newberry Township Police.
Rivera is charged with felony counts of criminal conspiracy to commit robbery, theft, receiving stolen property and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
According to the investigation, Hughes allegedly robbed the victim on Oct. 3 at his Newberry Township home. The victim reported that he and Hughes had argued about drugs inside the home, during which Hughes became irate and slapped him across the face, police said. The victim told police he tried to leave the home using his walker, but Hughes allegedly shoved him to the ground and threatened to burn his eye with a lit cigarette. She then struck him in the head with the bottom of a utility knife, the victim reported.
Hughes and Rivera, who was also present, then picked the victim up and placed him in his chair, where Hughes continued to threaten the victim with the utility knife, the victim reported. She then took $100 in cash from the victim, along with his cell phone and his vehicle.
Hughes and Rivera then used the victim's bank card, which was in a wallet inside his vehicle, to make more than $2,000 in unauthorized purchases, according to police.
The victim was forced to sit in his chair for two full days due to his handicap, police said. A neighbor eventually found him and contacted authorities, police said.
