Assistive technology library available at Penn-Mar in York County

A regional nonprofit is celebrating one year of its assistive technology library.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Assistive technology, offered by Penn-Mar Human Services, is a program that provides people living with physical or developmental disabilities an opportunity to live more independently.

“There are many things with assistive technology, whether it’s low tech or high tech that can really help somebody be independent, help them with their life, to live their best life really,” said Allis Kensing, the assistive technology coordinator with Penn-Mar Human Services.

The library provides people with intellectual and physical disabilities with whatever tools they need to make life easier.

Items include a large computer keyboard for the visually impaired and cardholders for people with shaky hands. The library also offers fidgeting tools to people with sensory motor issues.

Tools are borrowed and returned, similar to a traditional library.

Kensing says it’s important the library maintains variety.

“They’re very person-centered because everybody’s need, how they use it, how it would benefit them, is different,” Kensing explained.

Many of the tools were funded by the Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to provide support for technology that enhances the provision of Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS).

Kensing says it’s never a quiet day.

“On average, I can have about five, six, ten people stop by, I have my frequent flyers who always like to come and ask Alexa different conversations and questions," Kensing said.

More tools are expected to be added to the library soon.

“It’s an added value to somebody’s life,” Kensing noted.
