Community reacts to three dead in Hanover stabbing incident

A Hanover neighborhood is shocked and confused after a 17-year-old juvenile, a 49-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man died in a domestic incident on Thursday.

HANOVER, Pa. — A Hanover, York County neighborhood is still trying to comprehend what exactly happened after three people were killed in a stabbing incident that took place on the 900 block of E Walnut Street.

"It’s just the shock that something like this happened," said Andrew Bolin, a Hanover resident who lives in the neighborhood. "It happens everywhere. It’s only a matter of time before it gets close to you, but here?"

The Hanover Borough Police Department responded to a report of a stabbing around 10:12 am on Dec. 28. They discovered a 27-year-old Hanover man outside of a house with severe injuries. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.

The man told police that other family members were still inside the residence, where officers soon discovered Dylan Arvisu, 17, and his mother, Guadalupe Morales, 49, dead at the scene of the stabbing. The victims were identified Dec. 29 by the York County Coroner's Office which referred to the deaths as an "isolated domestic incident."

Shortly after clearing the home, officers found Rogelio Arvizu, 50, lying along the 900 block of Broadway with severe injuries. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

According to online court documents, Rogelio was facing two counts of criminal homicide and two counts of attempted criminal homicide stemming from the Dec. 28 incident. The charges were dropped after his death.

As details were revealed, neighbors were shocked something like this could happen in their own backyard.

"[It's a] very quiet neighborhood," said David Wine, who lives across the street from where the incident occurred. "I was born and raised here, so I'm 63 now, this is the biggest thing to happen around here."

"[It] progressively hits you," said Bolin. "You just feel an overwhelming sadness and it sticks with you."

The Hanover Borough Police Department was assisted on the scene by the York County Sheriff's Department, York County Forensics Team, York County Coroner's Office and Hanover Area Fire and Rescue EMS.

Despite the feeling of shock and confusion, neighbors say with each other's support and a situation well-handled by police, there was never a sense of fear.

"If there was any concern about safety that was gone when they got the last gentleman," said Bolin. "I feel pretty good about the neighborhood. Everybody talked to each other to make sure everybody was alright."

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, knows about the incident, or who may have outside camera surveillance in the 900 block of East Walnut Street and Broadway and the 500 block of Witmer Avenue is asked to call the police department at 717-637-5575.
