Coroner identifies fatally struck York County fire police officer

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Update, Aug. 18: The York County Coroner's Office has identified the fire police officer who was fatally while in the line of duty on Friday.

Brian Peek, 67, of Newberry Township, was reportedly struck by a vehicle while directing traffic in the area of Red Mill Road and Corn Hill Road. The coroner's office confirmed that Peek died on the scene, and was officially pronounced dead at 2:27 p.m.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, Aug. 19. The coroner determined the cause of Peek's death to be blunt force injuries and the manner to be accidental.

Previously: Officials are investigating the death of a York County fire police officer. 

According to the Newberry Township Police Department, the unnamed fire police officer was struck and killed at the intersection of Red Mill and Corn Hill Roads on Aug. 16 at 2:20 p.m. 

The officer was directing traffic at the intersection following a separate crash in the area.

Due to the circumstances of the incident, Newberry Township Police have requested the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) be the lead agency on this investigation. 

The Newberry Township Police Department released the following statement regarding the death: 

"Today’s incident is a tragedy in our community. Volunteer emergency responders are a crucial part of public safety system for our community. They selflessly volunteer their time on a daily basis knowing the risks associated with their tasks. On behalf of Newberry Township  Police and the Department of Public Safety, we express our deepest gratitude to the fallen fire police officer for their service to our community. Furthermore, we offer our sincere condolences to the family and all of their fellow first responders during this tough time.
