Dover residents fear losing property over warehouse proposal

A proposed new warehouse campus in Dover Township, York County is causing residents to worry about the impact it could have on nearby roads.

DOVER, Pa. — A proposed new warehouse campus in Dover Township, York County is causing residents to worry about the impact it could have on nearby roads, which may need to be altered to accommodate the increase in truck traffic.

The proposed warehouses from global real estate developer Hines would be located on the land between Canal Road, Bull Road and Nursery Road. The intersection of Bull and Canal Roads, already one of the busiest in Pennsylvania without a stoplight, would likely not be able to handle the trucks expected to drive through.

Austin Hogue, who owns Dottie's Family Market on the intersection, says he has already received a letter from PennDOT that his parking lot will be used for construction vehicles when the project happens.

His concern is that the next letter will force him to give up his property.

"Worst case scenario would be that they would choose to go with a layout that would take this location here as part of the roundabout traffic, turn lane, whatever that may be," Hogue said. "I'd like to have the clarity and be able to say, 'Hey, this is exactly what's happening.' But at this point, it's still a lot of speculation. And until the chips fall, we won't know what exactly is going to happen."

Hogue says when he bought the store five years ago, there was concern at the time that the property would be taken to improve the intersection. He says the market, which has been in the community for six decades, should not have to be sacrificed for the project to go forward.

"We own the business, but I feel like it's kind of a community-owned business," Hogue said. "It's been a landmark. We just try and do our best to continue the legacy that's been created over the last six decades and try and make it a place that people are proud to have in their community."

The Dover Planning Commission meets Wednesday at 7 p.m. to discuss the preliminary plan for the warehouse. FOX43 reached out to PennDOT for comment but has yet to hear back.
