YORK COUNTY, Pa. — A former York County coroner has passed away, the office announced on X.

Barry Bloss Sr. served York County as the coroner for 16 years before retiring. He was responsible for a number of improvements to the department, including moving the office from downtown York to East York and pitching a coroner's office and morgue in a single location—a concept that came to fruition 17 years later.

The York County Coroner's Office shared the following statement:

"We were sad to hear of the recent death of former York County Coroner Barry Bloss Sr. We will always be grateful for his expansion of the Deputy Coroner system and efforts to move the Coroner’s Office from downtown to East York, both practical and efficient decisions.

"He was dedicated to educating the public about preventing so many of the maladies that would lead to sudden and premature death, and that work has continued to expand. He also had a long-term vision for a  coroner’s office and morgue - all in one location.

"We had the honor of giving him and his wife, Lola, their own private tour of that vision-turned-reality back in July of 2021 at our new Concord Road facility, 8 years after he had left office and 17 years since he had brought his initial vision to the County Commissioners.

"He was beaming as he walked through the building, obviously pleased with what had finally been achieved, knowing that our community would benefit.

"Some of us did not have the privilege of knowing him during his law enforcement tenure, but we are thankful to him for those years of service and for his commitment to the York County Coroner’s Office for 16 years.

"Our sincere condolences go out to his friends, colleagues and family, as he will be greatly missed."
