YORK, Pa. — Four people required EMS evaluation after a hazardous materials incident at a York County facility on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 9:20 a.m. at Guardian GSC, a water treatment facility located at 6000 Susquehanna Plaza Drive in Hellam Township, according to the York County Hazmat Team, which dispatched two units to the scene.

An investigation determined two chemicals were inadvertently mixed at the facility, causing a vapor cloud. The incident caused the facility to be evacuated as a precaution.

Four people at the facility requested to be evaluated by EMS, the Hazmat Team said.

Hazmat units made a Level B entry to the facility, meaning responders went inside wearing a medium level of personal protective equipment, the Hazmat Team said.

It was determined the vapor cloud was caused by the mixing of sulfuric acid and sodium nitrate, which caused an exothermic reaction.

The Hazmat Team determined the reaction had stopped and there was no danger to the public. Employees were allowed to re-enter the facility after proper ventilation had been completed.

Units operated on scene for approximately two hours, the Hazmat Team said.
