Lebanon Cemetery reopens in time for Memorial Day

It is unclear whether the discovery was a new act of vandalism or part of a similar incident discovered a week prior at the historically African-American cemetery.

YORK, Pa. — Update, May 26: Officials with the Lebanon Cemetery have confirmed that it has reopened to the public.

At this time,  only the smaller section closest to 11th Avenue will remain closed. In a video shared on the cemetery's Facebook page, an official stated, "There are still hazards and some issues, but we didn't want to prevent families from coming on the property this holiday weekend."

"Please use caution when on the property. If you see any other loose stones, we ask that you report that to the Lebanon Cemetery Company," the official continued.

Anyone with a family member's stone that was damaged is asked to contact the Lebanon Cemetery.

Previously: After the discovery of another large stone that was found toppled on the ground, the Lebanon Cemetery in York is temporarily closed, the cemetery's owners said Wednesday.

The cemetery's management said Wednesday that they aren't sure if the latest stone found overturned is a new incident, or related to a similar incident that occurred there last week when several other stones were found knocked over.

Workers at the historically African American cemetery discovered between seven and nine gravestones knocked over last Friday morning, the Lebanon Cemetery Company said.

"With over 2,000 stones on the property, the members of the volunteer Lebanon Cemetery Company need to secure resources to assess the safety of the entire property," Wednesday's Facebook post reads. "With this in mind, Lebanon Cemetery is now closed, effective immediately."

While the closure is in place, no one will be permitted on the property without prior authorization, the Lebanon Cemetery Company said in a separate post, which includes a video of the suspected vandalism.

The cemetery will remain closed until the work to enhance the property's safety is complete, the post said.

"We are working hard to have the cemetery open before Memorial Day so that we can honor our veterans who laid down their lives for our country," the Facebook post concludes. "The Lebanon Cemetery Company needs the support of our families to meet the long-term needs of the cemetery. Please consider volunteering your time to help or donate funds towards our efforts."

The Lebanon Cemetery is asking any neighboring homes or businesses with security cameras to check for any suspicious activity around the time of the incident or incidents.
